An athlete stretches in a monochrome studio beside three oversized red Ls.

An eight-second, silent AI-generated parody film. An athlete stretches as a worker removes a red L. The returning worker carries an R and sets it down. Campaign clothing is illustrative; product pages show approved AI studio views, with supplier photos where studio views are still under review.

ABOUT THE THREE LETTERS

A name should
welcome people in.

We thought that was a reasonable place to start.

lululemon→rururemon

In a 2021 interview, lululemon founder Chip Wilson explained his reasoning for choosing three Ls:

“I’m going to put three Ls in it and see if I can get three times as much.”

He associated the letter with Western branding and its perceived value in Japan. We wondered what would happen if you reversed the strategy.

So we changed three letters and reconsidered the price. An unusually literal response to a business idea.

Earlier remarks about Japanese pronunciation were reported in 2005. Our commentary is directed at that branding decision. These are historical founder remarks, not a statement of lululemon’s current policies. Everyone is welcome to pronounce our name however they like.

A few reasonable questions.

Answered with considerable seriousness.

Is this an elaborate response to a naming decision?

Yes. We also included the size charts.

How do I pronounce rururemon?

However you like. We have decided not to build a business model around this.

Why does this all look so familiar?

The familiar storefront is part of the commentary. Rururemon is an independent parody of lululemon, with no affiliation or endorsement.

And the manufacturing in Asia?

Asia was never the punchline. The skill of its makers and the prestige of a Western label are different things. Our collection is sourced through independent suppliers. Matching a fiber ratio does not mean matching lululemon’s proprietary fabrics or using its factories.
